Change what you need to- as long as it isn't something totally crazy like adding Lando Calrissian into the mix.

Personally I think it would be a pleasant surprise to read back through (I do that occaisionally) and find something different. Otherwise if it doesn't change how the story moves forward this current reader won't be bothered.

Ah, but there's the fine line! I guess as long as no major plot elements don't get ruffled up things will be okay. That's the gist I'm getting.
